Why make this film?In April 2011 we set out to California to film people who had committed to an unusual but strongly-held belief. We did this to explore the feeling of being right, an experience that inspires our best and worst actions.
It's that knowing we're right, every time we say, “I'm right” and “you're wrong”. It fuels our most polarised debates and conflicts in society. We rarely resolve these debates and, paradoxically, the more we argue with each other, the more convinced we can become. Eventually we may view those we disagree with as stupid, crazy or evil. The story that caught our attention was that 21 May 2011 would be Judgement Day. Earthquakes would devastate the world and God would take his chosen up to heaven. California-based broadcaster Family Radio spread the message which captivated people across the US and further afield. What was special about their belief was the date: a precise moment when they would find out if they were right or not - by their own standard of the truth. |
